West Cork Secret

Children from 3rd – 5th enjoyed a trip to West Cork Secret on May 25th. They participated in a variety of activities throughout the day. These included team building activities, orienteering, obstacles courses and mud runs. They thoroughly enjoyed the day. The sun shone for the event which made it even better.

Welcome Bob!

On Friday 28th April we had a wonderful day for the cutting of the ribbon ceremony of our giant Bob. As part of our new school development a number of years ago we were very fortunate to receive an Art Per Cent Grant from the Arts Council.

There was a lengthy process involved in the project which took two years. An open call was made to artists inviting them to submit their proposals. A committee of staff, Board of Management and other artists came together to discuss and consider each proposal.
Finally, we choose a piece of sculpture created by Sarah Goyvaerts. We felt that her proposal would really enhance our outdoor space and allow the children to interact with art as well as develop their imagination and storytelling.
The concept of Sarah’s project was based around the Oak Giant. The giant is holding an acorn in his hand, a seed from which to grow – ‘From a tiny acorn grows a mighty oak’. Acorns are considered a symbol of learning and growth and once given the space, grow into majestic trees. We felt that this message was very fitting for our school environment.
The giant arrived in school over the October holiday and the children were in awe of it when they returned. The school ran a writing competition inviting the children to write and draw about where they thought the giant had come from and what he was doing in Cloughduv.  Wonderful stories were written and finally Farrah’s story was the chosen winner.
On Friday last, the community were invited to the cutting of the ribbon. There was a great atmosphere around the school. The Parents Association along with the Wellbeing Team organised a very successful cake sale. The Green Schools Committee gave an update on their work to date, all sang a very appropriate giant song and finally Denis O’ Leary, our Chairperson and Farrah cut the ribbon.
We would like to give a special thank you to Castlemore Quarry for donating the limestone and Hickey’s for engraving it.
We were also delighted to welcome members from the Macroom Men’s Shed on the day who recently made a beautiful display noticeboard for the outside of our school.

Sciath na Scol

April saw our Camogie and Hurling teams play the bulk of their Sciath na Scol group matches. First up at Cloughduv GAA grounds we played Crossmahon. A strong Crossmahon ran out winners in both hurling and camogie fixtures. The girls were defeated by a goal, whereas the boys fell to defeat by two points.

Up next was Goggin’s Hill, once again at Cloughduv GAA Grounds. Here, the girls stormed ahead but lost. The boys ran out 4-3 to 6 points winners.

Then came our first away fixture in Brinny versus Knockavilla. The girls lost narrowly by 2 points. The boys overcame a strong performance from Knockavilla to rally on and provide a 6-8 to 3-4 victory.

Finally we travelled to Ballinhassig to play Ballyheada. The girls gave a great performance, and the boys fell short. Unfortunately, the girls will not progress.
The boys were victorious in a play-off against Goggin’s Hill. They faced Ballyheada in a thrilling semi-final where they were sadly beaten.

Well done to the team and  thank you to all the parents who took time and effort to provide transport. A big thanks to Mr.McElroy and Mr.O’Callaghan who gave up their time to train the teams.

Cork Choral Festival

Our school choir had the opportunity to perform their Beatles Medley again at the Cork Choral Festival on the May Bank Holiday. They were the only school choir on the day which was a real honour for us. Although the choir had reduced numbers this time, they sang with great enthusiasm & energy. Ms. Linehan was very proud of them!
