Sciath na Scol

On Thursday March 21st we started our Sciath na Scol campaign against Gaelscoil Cionn tSáile at home. Both our hurlers and camogie players put in a great display. The hurlers won convincingly, but unfortunately our girls fell short after a hard fought display.
On Thursday April 11th we made the journey to Courcey Rovers to play Ballinspittle N.S in our second Sciath na Scol match of the campaign. The conditions were tough for both our teams. After a very encouraging display from both teams we were out played. That did not dampen spirits as there was a fantastic sing-song on the bus back from the game.

Best of luck in the upcoming matches!

Seachtain na Gaeilge

We celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge during the week before Easter break. All classes took part in a number of activities. Some activities involved children of different ages working together. Activities included tóraíocht taisce, ‘Haca’ as Gaeilge, tráth na gceist, céilí beag leis an amhrán ‘An Dreoilín’ agus an scannán ‘Yo Ming is Ainm Dom’.

During Assembly, our musicians and dancers performed for the school.

Green Schools Update

The Green School have been working on the Travel theme for 2 years. As we are in our 2nd year, we are applying for the flag. Some of the tasks we did over the years were as follows: promoted more economical travel to school, variety of lessons on travel,  had An Taisce talks on Climate change for Senior classes and safe crossing for Junior classes. We have also applied for zebra crossings to be installed in the village and been granted a cover for our bike shelter. We had a very successful Bike Week last year, thanks to the PA.

We are delighted that our recent survey showed an increase in all sustainable methods of travel to school. Cycling is up by 8%, carpooling by 9.6% and walking by 10%!

We continue to work on maintaining our flags for Litter & Waste, Energy and Water. Ongoing activities include annual upcycling Christmas decoration competition, daily composting and recycling, using spare paper when we can, regularly litter picking and making a bug hotel.

We would like to thank to staff and the school community for their support.

Choir City Hall Performance

On March 11th the school choir, made up of 25 children from 3rd-6th performed their ABBA medley in the City Hall. It was a huge achievement for these 25 children, as the City Hall holds 1000 spectators. The children did themselves proud & looked fantastic wearing their specially designed ABBA T-shirts!

February festivities!

February has been a very busy month in Cloughduv NS with lots of fun experiences for the children. As so many festivities fell during the month, different classes tried new activities. 1st Class celebrated the Chinese New Year with their new student & her Mom who showed the children how to write in Mandarin. Pancake Tuesday saw lots of flipping (& eating!) around the school. 2nd class even had a pancake race! St. Brigid’s Day encouraged the older classes to use their crafting skills to make St. Brigid’s day crosses-not as easy as it looks! The younger classes enjoyed making their Valentine’s Day cards for their loved ones. Plenty of sports activities- hurling & football coaches have been generously provided by our local GAA clubs. The school is very grateful for that.

Spanish Classes

The children in 3rd & 4th class enjoyed 8 weeks of Spanish Classes with Ms.Linehan. Topics taught included colours, numbers, food and basic conversations.

It was a taster programme for the teaching of modern foreign languages which will be introduced into primary schools in the future. At the end of the 8 weeks, the children celebrated with tasty ‘churros con chocolate’ & danced to the Macarena!

VEX robotics

In 5th Class, science this month was based around VEX Robotics as we prepared to finalise the robot we had been building & programming for the Regional VEX Robotics Competition at MTU on January 18th.We made the finals on the day but fell short in the judges and teamwork awards category. A lot of experience and knowledge was gained on the day as we collaborated with other schools to complete challenges with the robot we built. Our engineers log book was handed up and the PR Team consulted with the judges about the documentation of our VEX STEM journey.

We competed with & against 20 other school teams from the county of Cork. The programming, engineering & mathematical skills along with scientific skills learned were utilised in a friendly but competitive structure. Children represented themselves and their school with great pride. All pupils enjoyed the day out and experienced college life for a day as it was held in MTU. Positive social skills were used when collaborating with other schools.

Christmas in Cloughduv NS

It has been a very busy Christmas period here at school. We have had upcycled art competitions, singing at  Cork airport, Christmas concerts & a visit from a very special guest. Wishing all our school community a very Merry Christmas!

Happy Halloween!

All the children (and staff!) dressed up to celebrate Halloween before Midterm break. Lots of scary witches, ghosts and sharks were seen roaming around the school. The biggest surprise was that the Minions took over 6th class!!

Come on Ireland!

To support the Irish rugby team in the quarter final, all the children wore green, white & orange clothes on Friday. Some children even dyed their hair!! Everyone looked fantastic & the Irish Rugby team would have been proud. It was also a fundraiser for 5th class as they plan on entering the VEX Robotics competition this year. Although the rugby team were not successful in the end, we hope that 5th class will be!!
