On Wednesday, 12th June, the children in Junior and Senior Infants along with Ms. Linehan, Ms. Breen and Garda James went to Rumley’s Farm for their school tour.

Everyone had a great time seeing all the animals, getting to rub some of the baby animals, going on a tractor ride around the farm and playing in the outdoor and indoor play areas.

Green Flag Celebrations

On Friday, 7th June, we celebrated our second Green Flag with an action packed ‘green themed’ day!

We began the day with a green / environmental themed fancy dress parade! So many children made a wonderful effort to dress up in a costume appropriate to the day. The judges from the Green Schools Committee had a very tough task picking the prizewinners in each classroom. Here are some photos of a few of the fantastic costumes.

Then we all went to the front of the school for the flag raising ceremony. Mrs. Landers made a lovely speech thanking everyone for all their help in helping to reduce the energy we use in the school which has helped us receive the Green Flag and ultimately is helping the environment. Holly and Grace from the Green Schools Committee also made a wonderful speech about their time working on the committee, the impact of our actions on the environment and why we need initiatives like the Green Flag.

Then we all returned to the hall and Mrs. Lander’s class sang some environmental themed songs for us and there were cakes and treats for everyone baked by the children in 5th and 6th classes. We had a wonderful day!

Journal Art Competition Winners

An art competition was held in the school recently for a picture to go on the cover of our Cloughduv N.S. homework journal for the school year 2019 – 2020.

Well done to the three prize winners – Sean, Rachel and Zong. Ms. Linehan presented them with their prizes at assembly last week.

School Tour – Spike Island

The children also enjoyed an action packed afternoon on the recreation fields completing various obstacle courses, relay races and other activities before returning by boat to Cobh and back to Cloughduv.

Health Promotion Activities

We launched our Healthy Eating Week on Monday 27th May with a visit from Eileen Haran of the Health Promotion Schools to present us with our Health Promoting flag. It was a beautiful morning and all classes gathered at the front of the school for the flag raising.
On Tuesday 28th, 4th, 5th and 6th class made homemade pesto and hummus in class which we all got to sample on Wednesday.
On Wednesday 29th, Caroline Robinson, a local organic farmer came in to talk to all classes at assembly. She showed us some of her produce. She showed us chard, leeks, basil, onions, Kohl Rabi, lettuce and broccoli. She told us about the important role earthworms play in breaking down compost. She gave the 5th and 6th class students a present of lettuce plants which she suggested they planted at the front of the school because of its south facing aspect. She also gave us a bag of pea seeds which we must soak overnight before planting.
While Caroline was talking to us, the Parents Association were very busy in the kitchen preparing a selection of alternative lunch options for all classes. We tasted tuna, lettuce and sweetcorn wraps, bagels with cream cheese and lambs lettuce, pasta pesto with peppers, carrot sticks and hummus, strawberries, blueberries, a variety of melons and pomegranate.
On Thursday 30th, Junior and Senior Infants enjoyed making and tasting smoothies in class.
On Thursday 6th June Mags Guilfoyle, a home economics teacher showed us how to make homemade vegetable soup and brown bread which we all got to sample. She also gave us a recipe for healthy cereal bars.
